Deebo Samuel has been named the SEC Special Teams Player of the Week for his spectacular performance in South Carolina season-opening 35-28 win over NC State.
Samuel returned the opening kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown to give the Gamecocks a 7-0 lead. It was Samuel’s second career kickoff return for a score and the first time in school history that the season-opening kick was returned for a touchdown.
Samuel also caught five passes for 83 yards and two touchdowns. He caught a six-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter and a 39-yarder from Jake Bentley in the third quarter. The 39-yard score, a one-handed grab after Bentley scrambled to avoid a sack, put South Carolina up 28-21.
Samuel, a junior from Inman, S.C., had 185 all-purpose yards. The performance also earned him a spot on the Paul Hornung Award Honor Roll for week one.
South Carolina travels to Missouri Saturday for a 7 p.m. ET game (ESPN2) against the Tigers.
